FAQs

How Can I Be Seen by a Consultant at Manchester Hip Knee Surgeon?

Private Patients and Self-Funders
If you have private medical insurance or are self-funding, a GP referral letter is not required. Private patients should contact their insurance provider to obtain authorisation prior to your consultation.

NHS Patients
For NHS patients, a referral from your GP via the electronic Referral System (eRS) is necessary.

Where Can I Be Seen for My Consultation?

Consultations are available at our designated private hospital facilities across Greater Manchester. These include select accredited treatment centres where our expert team provides outpatient assessments and care.

How Quickly Can I Be Seen?

For patients with private insurance or those self-funding, clinic appointments are typically arranged within one week. Please contact our appointment team on 0161 7946510 to book an appointment at a time that suits you. Additionally, if you prefer to be seen at one of our affiliated hospital sites, you may also use our easy online booking service available on the hospital’s website.

How Quickly Can I Have Investigations?

X-rays are usually performed on the day of your consultation. If an MRI scan is required, it can generally be arranged within a few days following your initial appointment.

Where Can I Have Physiotherapy, If Needed?

Physiotherapy can be arranged at a clinic near your home or at the hospital where your outpatient consultation takes place. If you are already receiving physiotherapy, we encourage you to continue your current treatment programme.

Where Can I Have Hip or Knee Surgery?

Surgical procedures—including hip replacement, knee replacement, and other hip or knee surgeries—are undertaken at our affiliated hospital sites in the Greater Manchester region. Our expert team ensures that your surgical treatment is fully integrated with your rehabilitation programme for optimal recovery.

Do I Need Private Health Insurance?

We welcome both privately insured and self-funding patients. Self-pay options are available for your outpatient consultation and for our full range of services, including hip and knee replacements. For self-funders, package prices for surgery can be arranged through our dedicated self-pay office.

Do I Need to Check With My Insurance Provider?

Yes, if you have private medical insurance, please check with your insurer regarding cover for consultation, investigations, and surgery.

How Can I Find Out About the Cost of Treatment?

Our consultants are fee assured with all major private medical insurance providers, ensuring that you remain within the benefit limits and avoid any unexpected shortfall. For self-funding patients, the fees are typically £200 for an initial consultation and £150 for a follow-up consultation. For further details regarding costs, please contact our patient services team directly.

What Happens After a Surgical Procedure?

Many procedures - such as knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction - are performed as day case procedures, allowing you to return home on the same day. In cases of hip or knee replacement surgery, you are usually discharged the following day once you are comfortable and safely mobilising. At discharge, a follow-up appointment will be arranged. Should you have any concerns after your procedure, please contact the hospital ward for advice and support.
